Melissa: And where do you seek these new ideas? But when we average it out, Im telling them at your current rate of effort and commitment youre not going to sign a pro contract. On this podcast we talk to top culture makers in the world today from a variety of industries and backgrounds to unpack the visible and not so visible forces that make up this often overlooked superpower, culture. And of course these are, you know, very successful CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and their top managerial staff, and every one of them has paid like, you know, $20,000 to be in the room, and of course theyre righteously indignant with this incredibly successful man telling them to fall on the bottom 10% of their workforce. I read every business book that, you know, makes the New York Times top 10 bestseller list. Hes an unbelievable man, but hes incredibly demanding.. And honestly, I knew that what you had to do with them, like your culture, wants to get people to do extraordinary things, to live the culture. Anson, thank you so much for taking time. And of course your mom totally agrees with you. Maybe you can let us in on the secret. So obviously lets change the order. Im awestruck with the power of this tool. And by the way, I have a leadership class that meets once a week all off season for 1/2 hour called my leadership council, and its my leadership training platform. On this episode of Bring It In season three, Anson sat down with Sam and discussed ranking your players, setting standards and core values, and surrounding criticism with love and care. Your gift will make a lasting impact on the quality of government and civic participation in North Carolina. So if you want to develop elite athletes, you dont develop them in a recreational environment. And I want to sit there and I want to get $100,000 for sitting there and just answering questions. So those three fundamental things, basically the core values, which is character construction, the competitive cauldron, which is basically mentality construction. Whats my job? No, everything is different. Its not gonna work. And heres the other thing that Jack was so good about explaining to me. I could feel the love. And my ego after that conversation or soaring like a hawk, she could feel my love. And even though, basically I made the presentation to him and his and this is executive staff like Ive made to your listeners, I learned more reading that book, and what I loved about it is getting back to the principle of loving those you lead, loving those you coach, loving those you, teach because he clearly does. What you have to recruit and who you have to hire is character. That is correct - 22 national titles. I was given permission to repost the list here by Anson Dorrance. They have come from philosophers, writers, former captains, and even a team manager. I will never be negative about a persons constructed confidence, and I will never judge them on it. And then after I had a collision with this player and her family that had me involved in a ten-year lawsuit, a girl I should have cut in the preseason of her freshman year and it would have solved all kinds of problems a couple of years later, when I finally did cut her, Ive now learned it. How core values in sports transcends to the workplace with Anson Dorrance. What are our core values? If you gave them a one they rarely lived this core value. Thats what elementary school children do in the United States. Brodsky looks at all and says, Okay, you guys dont memorize this poetry and this literature, and none of you guys get your PhDs. And with tails firmly tucked between their legs, they went out of his office and got to work. Anson Dorrance is an American soccer coach. He was the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. Were trying to drive them to be accountable and to take responsibility for everything because in a typical narrative you dont. In my experience its a crock. Now the players thinking gosh, you know, Mom, youre absolutely right. Whats the 1 word you think of when you think about culture? But youre actually giving them a very positive opportunity when you fire them. Back in my day, we were accountable for our grades and our parents held us responsible for our performance. Melissa: So its been fun for me because I went through the process, as I was getting ready for this interview I read about you and I watched some interviews that you gave, and I have to tell you I was positively blown away by your numbers. But youre not a leader. So even though theyve done nothing but lie to their parents about their performance, now theyre fed all this garbage thats based on the lies youve told your parents thats created a narrative that youve been cheated. Anson: Hi. Were sending our top athletes all over the place and a lot of that is because they are living the core values in the most positive way and Im writing that into the recommendation. He knows a thing or two about winning. In other words, Id love to be able to read the narrative that that person is using. So I think, yeah, business can save the world. I didnt think there was a coach in the world that I couldnt play for. Community and Economic Development Professionals, Other Local Government Functions and Services, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Melissa: Oh, I love that. So if a kid comes in and they havent done very well that season, and this is a post season review, they all have a protective narrative thats usually, in my environment, organized and I guess constructed in a loop with their parents. And please follow us on iTunes. And then all of a sudden five minutes before the practice session begins a manager of the team comes up and hands us a practice outline of whats going to happen. Maybe when you fire them theyre going to finally find an environment they love and youve actually helped them. I just want to answer. And then theyre all forced totheyre all forced to memorize. This kid is coming home from school. A COLLECTION OF COACHING WISDOM Anson Dorrance What I Have Learned From Anson Dorrance The fight, the struggle creates a wonderful hardening, strengthening In competition we get to see your character in action Raising the bar Never being satisfied Fighting to get to the next level Extraordinary confidence comes from extraordinary training This stuff is recorded. But my HR person is also fantastic and plays a huge role in it, so I agree with your concepts. So Anson, you are quite an accomplished man and Im sure have lots of great insights to share with us. So how do you inject this mindset into your players? And he believes in creating community, he believes in treating people exceptionally well. And I was thinking you know what, thats what Ive got to do. Sam: Coach, I think theres a lot of stuff that any business owner could take from what you just said, especially the getting them to the truth part. Melissa: Thats really interesting. Part of the UNC Women's Soccer philosophy is about breaking down personal narratives so that we can construct an accurate view of ourselves and how we can improve. Each year the players grade themselves and their teammates on the extent to which they embody the core values. And basically you have a strong man running everything. So its not an email you can send out to your 6,000 employees and hope to lead them. He says one factor is 12 Core Values. In other words, you were so incredibly demanding. There was nothing inspiring about them, and I was thinking gosh, none of this stuff works. They have to get a sense of their relationship with you that you appreciate the fact they are different. You dont have to save everyone in your company. And heres what Im learning from it. Melissa Jezior is a workplace culture guru who has helped clients tap into the superpower of culture throughout her career. And she and her colleagues were insulted, and this cabal got together and basically said I dont think Professor Brodsky understands who hes dealing with here. Thank you. And of course everyone gasps, and everyone is now throwing their hands into the air. Now, the way we raise our kids, as we spend every single day ass-kissing all of them, they have no sense of authority because they know their parents are full of crap. Everything you read in his book is absolutely true. I mean, whats amazing to me is the lack of confidence in so many extraordinary women Ive trained. Anson: And I said you know what, I agree with you. And keep in mind the data that is collected and posted on our bulletin board every day is a daily review, so they are getting constant review. The Tar Heels' record under Dorrance stood at 809-67-36 (.887 winning percentage) over 33 seasons at the end of the 2017 season. Other values are more inspiringthe truly extraordinary do something every day, we choose to be positive, and we care about each other as teammates and as human beings. But right now for us its hit or miss. And so I had all these ridiculous core values that I was expecting everyone to live by, but no one really lived by them except if it was a coincidence. Im trying to drive every one of my kids to their potential. And she runs a character lab. And let me tell you this, when you fire them, what you are hoping for them, they can find a place they want to be for a company they want to work for. And then all of a sudden at the end of practice, and theyre following this protocol, a buzzer goes off and they go from one drill to the next. And so basically I had this one wonderful kid that is listening to me, and she must have nodded inside because by George, the following year she wasshe was a verbal leader. And it changed, it changed her cerebral fabric. And so there are two advantages to me, competing in a training environment. Dean Smith now has the sheet of paper that the head manager handed him. So thats our first core value. Now will this help them change their opinion of you? mayo 21, 2021 . Melissa: Yes. They have come from philosophers, writers, former captains, and even a team manager. So who am I in this player conference? Im sorry, but I completely disagree with what youre saying. And he would be very patient and he wouldnt debate them and he would just nod and let them finish. And we would give speeches and then Jack Welch, the famous CEO of General Electric, would get up there on a stage and sit in a comfortable chair like Im doing now. Its what business can do for America. Richard Whisnant recently shared an interestingdocument on our Blackboard strategic planning site that provides at least part of the answer. My job is to get them to the truth as fast as possible. And then basically getting their personal narrative to the truth and my opinion, those are the three most critical things about what my responsibility here is for these wonderful kids I get to train. Its basically about accountability. I am a member of a conservative church. You just want to be the best on this team. Anson: Well, Im one of these guys that, you know, loves to read. And one of the things that really interested me the most about you, Anson, after reading about you and talking to Lindsay Henson here at Eagle Hill, and one of the phrases that she associates most with you and the team culture, was refuse to lose. Lindsay said refuse to lose really stays with her today, and not just as a memory, but really and truly as her mindset and how she shows up in all aspects of her life. So I have also read that you sit down with your players once a year to kind of do an overall player evaluation. The first time in her life and all of her conversations she had at her fingertips Russian poetry to recite to a colleague as they were discussing this poem or this short story or this novel. So anyway, we got her to shut up and we made a nice run. Im sorry, professor, but I dont think you understand where you are. But Im going to, you know, Im going to conform to the B.S. And every one of our players, basically, as peer evaluation, evaluates every kid in the program. SUBSCRIBE TO THE NEWSLETTER ----- My guest today is Anson Dorrance, UNC Women's Soccer Head Coach. And so if I tell them theyre, you know, utterly uncoachable what Im saying is every time I tell you this, you know, you, your reaction to it tells me you just dont think that thats what they should be doing, and your fight with me in this area is going to prevent you from reaching your potential. Reaching the National Championship 24 times, his winning percentage against the best teams in the country is well over 90%. And usually it blames someone else. The truly extraordinary do something every day. Coach Dorrance: Well, I think what youre trying to do within the context of what youre talking about in the work world, but this applies in our stuff incredibly. And it was just extraordinary. I was one of the warm-up bands along with Stephen Covey and Hyrum Smith. You'll get an educated look at these two systems while Coach Dorrance talks you through them using a conversational approach, accompanied by . And were notwere flexible. Think about that for a second. These have been developed over the years. Youre a businessman. And so this data collection is critical because what we can project, we can project where a kids going to go based on this fundamental principle of the cauldron. And now its the free throw line and back, mid stripe and back, other free throw line and back, end of the court and back. I will never touch that. This list of core-values was built by the team. The kid has come home from school with all Fs on his report card. And then sure enough, were following it, and it does. But now they get to rank themselves in 7 out of the 8 categories that were going to review. Anson: Well, yeah, because basically Im listening to this guy and hes absolutely right. Yes. And of course you hire Millennials. Melissa: So I hear youre about to begin your 41st season as head coach of the Tar Heels in the fall. Emulating the core values of the Carolina Womens Soccer Team is a noble goal, indeed, and I strongly advocate them! And so I learned a lot from Jack. Anson: Then I dont have to prepareyeah, I dont want to prepare a speech. All these kids that Ive convinced to transfer have gone someplace and maybe played more minutes, and then some of these kids now and I have connected in the most positive way, just because now theyve looked back and seen that Ive treated them very well. Welcome to the cultur(ED) podcast. And so often time its not just the training environment thats critical for us, its how we can get into, again, the mindset of the players to get them to change a certain mindset or a narrative thats protecting them from getting to their potential. So the review we have with them after weve looked at all the data is we want to rank them, and they rank themselves in these categories: self-discipline, competitive fire, self-belief, love of the ball, love of playing the game, love of watching the game, grit and coachability. And obviously youre going to have a different set just based on your own culture. So of course they all go storming into his office and told him, you know, Professor Brodsky, Im sorry, were not going to do this. I will never interfere with a persons self-belief. Anson: I would like to be able to see the future. So how did you find and figure out what the right 28 categories were to be able to provide feedback on? Yes, but not through any sort of authoritarianism. You criticized me here. Other values are more inspiringthe truly extraordinary do something every day, we choose to be positive, and we care about each other as teammates and as human beings. If its the two bigs against two other bigs, theyre having a little two V two competition underneath the basket. Heres your free first shooting percentage, heres whether you box out or failed to, heres whether you won or lost, everything is there. Thats awesome. She is the President and CEO of Eagle Hill Consulting, named a Top Place to Work by the Washington Post. So not only do we have 28 different categories, but all the categories have different value, and some of the value is extraordinary if you dont achieve in it you dont even get to practice with us. But heres the coolest thing about evaluating people with numbers. The first slide he showed was all I needed, and here was the first slide. Now Ive had leaders and Ive given them opportunities to lead. Most certainly. But talent is just so overwhelmingly tempting. Anson: So basically we have this hidden language the players know that Im using with the press thats designed to sort of protect them, but also designed to let them know theyre not good enough yet. The professor had some literature that I found so powerful that I now use it with my team. I really have to tell you how much I was looking forward to chatting with you today. The best coach you've never heard of has created an incredible team culture at the university of North Carolina. All of this has been done through the cauldron. So what I tried 1 year is I said listen, the press is going to call me next year and theyre going to ask me who my leaders are, and Im going to sort of mention all of your names. Because if I can deconstruct the persons excuse-ridden personal narrative, I can help them get to their potential. And I promise you if you took that energy that youve poured into a substandard salesman and you poured it into the top people in their company, your bottom line would be better. And youll appreciate this because youre a woman. That should be your perspective, is your bottom line, and heres the way you construct the most aggressive bottom line. And I was thinking, okay, this stuff Ive done for years, none of it has worked. So were always looking for a cutting edge idea that we think can move us forward. By this time the head manager has ranked every player in practice from one to 15, ranked. It is paired with the following quote from George Bernard Shaw: The true joy in life is to be a force of fortune instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. It would make you think twice before complaining about a lack of playing time, or anything else. Audio available on Apple Podcasts,Spotify, and Google Podcasts. And he is so right. The most important thing is what I just addressed. For example, the first core value is we dont whine. And we had alerts towards authoritarianism, and it was Donald Trump. In fact thought maybe I should adopt these, these are fantastic. My first meeting with every kid in September of their freshman year is to get their personal narrative to the truth. Basically these human wrecks, because the parents have absolutely spoiled them. And I know that thats something in the corporate world thats been a really hot topic lately, are performance reviews and giving people real time performance feedback. I have the perspective that the best managers arent just leaders, but theyre coaches, which I think is true. Coach Dorrance: I just finished reading a book and Im going to recommend it to all of your listeners right now. Melissa: I did look at your core values before this, and I was impressed, and I also thought they were extremely comprehensive. So anyway, so here is one experiment I tried 1 year. For example, the first core value is "we don't whine." And one of the things Ive seen recently is that we, in fact we did a study on this and found that 47% of corporate America does not know their organizations core values, which, if you think about it, on one hand is extremely surprising.
